A Fibonacci slab is the cream on the top of this kitchen renovation in a former dairy.

In one of the first projects to feature our new large format slabs, Melbourne’s respected kitchen design and building firm, Cantilever Interiors, together with their design-savvy clients, selected the Ink Blot slab for a renovation to a much-loved kitchen space in a unique home that had been part of the family for generations. And, in a neat twist, the choice of Fibonacci was perfect for both modern, and historical reasons.

Since the unique former diary building in Melbourne’s northern suburbs was handed down to its present owners 28 years ago, the kitchen has been its heart and soul. In addition to daily meals, it has stood up to no less than 50 parties, “and that’s just counting the parties of over 50 people,” says Jen, the owner. When she and husband Martin decided it was overdue for an update, they settled on Cantilever. “For me, it was their design philosophy, the factory principles, and that Cantilever locally manufacture. When we saw the K3 kitchen in their showroom, we could visualise that kitchen living in our space.”

The beauty and versatility of terrazzo is nothing new to us here at Fibonacci. Every time we see it specified in a project - be it a renovation to a period structure, or a strikingly contemporary new build, we are not surprised at its ability to transcend the trends.

When it came to the all-important task of selecting the materials, Jen, Martin, and the interior design team at Cantilever looked for products that were neutral, calm and clean-lined, and importantly, that would work just as hard as Jen does in the kitchen. A material palette of white cabinetry and hoop pine open shelves, and the original concrete floor created a quite restrained base, yet Jen wanted “something with a bit more wow and glamour in the middle, and Fibonacci had just announced that they were releasing their slab terrazzo, so we chose a slab for the Island bench,” she says. “It works beautifully with the neutral tones, the industrial feel of the space, and it’s a little bit of an ode to the older features of the house, as our existing bathroom has the original terrazzo that was poured when they first put that bathroom floor in. It’s a nice tie back to the home’s history.”

Fibonacci's Founder, Michael Karakolis says the slab range is perfect for benchtops and is thrilled with seeing it specified in many and varied design projects. “We’re looking forward to seeing many more beautiful kitchens featuring new designs in our ‘Dramaturgy’ slab range. As Jen put it, ‘the benchtop is pretty amazing, the tactility of it, and it looks superb!’”
